You may have heard about some recent changes to the way Google presents results. You may have even heard of these changes as “Google panda”. I watched this video from whiteboard Friday at SEOmoz and I think it does a great job at explaining the changes and what it’s all about. Anyway, this video is thorough, but I want to point out a few impacts that these changes will have on your web marketing focus:
Google panda is a philosophy, not just an algorithm change – the point here is that there will be changes on a regular basis (not once-off) and it’s all centered around the idea that people decide what’s a good site and what isn’t (not so much Google, as in the past)
Broaden your performance metrics for web marketing – so when analyzing the effectiveness of your search engine marketing efforts, you probably looked at page rank, and search engine rank, plus backlinks, keyword density, anchor text, and a few other things. Now, factors like click-through rate, time on site, pages visited, and social engagement are becoming heavier factors!
SEO’s must become web marketing strategists – this is a line stolen from the middle of this video and sums it up! You may think your website is great, but if everyone looks at it and clicks “back”, it won’t be seen that way by Google! It should be interesting, well presented and entertaining.
