I know a lot of bloggers love to bash social media marketing and criticize the idea of an internet marketing firm that offer “social marketing” as part of their service. It’s very trendy to criticize at the moment. But here’s a better way to look at the services of in internet marketing firm, especially for a small business:
1. What should I, as a small business owner, do to market my business on the web?
2. Do I have time to do this myself? Or should I employ some help with marketing?
So rather then continue this discussion under the banner of what an internet marketing form should do, let’s re-phrase the topic as “what are the first 3 things I should do for my own web marketing?”. (then if you answered “too busy” to the second question, refer to the original title).
Just like a bored teen would their own page:
I blogged the other day about the increasing trend for sharing through facebook and the impact for web marketing. This is big, so get onto it!
Take this as an approach: For every message that says “buy from me”, send 20 messages that are “if you’re a customer of mine, you may be interested in this”. So if you own a dog daycare business, send out tips about taking care of your dog, keeping your pets happy and healthy, links to good articles about pet care…..then occasionally, mention you’re having an open day special and explain how they can get in touch!
And an often overlooked 3rd tip is:
(but only if you’re the type of business people visit, of course). Even though people are checking in on Facebook more and more, don’t ignore the marketing potential of 8.5 million people checking in each month.
And like I said - if you don't have time to do this yourself, you may want to consider an internet marketing firm to help.
