Is marketing purely a case of a commercial enterprise trying to hard sell a product to a customer base that may not even want it? In its lowest, least ethical (and possibly most wasteful) form this may be true but marketing is much more than this type of behavior. Every time we share an opinion or idea with someone else we are doing a form of non-commercial marketing – essentially trying to publicize and sell the idea to others. Without this form of conversation ideas and knowledge would not spread as easily as they do. Marketing a product that helps meet a need in people’s lives can be an important way of contributing to the improvement of society.
