Social media have revolutionized the way people communicate and interact. Initially seen as the preserve of computer geeks and bored students, these platforms have rapidly become a part of modern mainstream culture.
In this interview with Brian Kenny, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer at Harvard Business School, he mentions some of the things the school has learned from their own experience of venturing into the world of social media. An interesting point he makes is that engaging with social media is less about the traditional way of protecting your brand and more about handing it over and allowing others to interact with it in a new and different way. Obviously this requires a lot of courage and a whole new way of thinking. In Mr Kenny's words, “We have to get comfortable being uncomfortable”. This advice is as relevant for brand owners and internet marketing firms as it is for academic institutions.
